I am not sure what it is about this time of year, but it seems like death is especially devastating. Last night, a cousin of mine passed away. He was significantly older then me and really was a great friend of my moms. While we were not very close, I always enjoyed his company. He had a wonderful sense of humor and lived life to the fullest. I feel for my aunt, his family, and my mother. I know how much they loved him and how greatly he will be missed.

I am so sorry - my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Yes, death is always devastating, but I think you're right about this time of year being especially hard. I lost my grandfather on Sunday. (On the winter solstice - darkest day of the year, for sure.) It feels like a punch in the gut every time I hear someone say "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas". Because, you know, how can it be?

I am sorry to hear about your grandfather. You are right, it is hard to be merry when so many people you love are hurting.
